Driving

Minimum driving age: 18

Front seat: child of 12+

Top speed on highway: 130 km/hour
Top speed on regional roads: 90 km/hour
Top speed limit in urban areas: 50 km/hour
Alcohol limit: zero                                            
Smoking, drinking, eating and use of cell phones while driving is forbidden. Use of lights is compulsory all day long

The highway toll is paid in form of a vignette bought on-line.

To avoid problems with the police remember to carry all your documents (ID, driving license, technical license), have the seat belt attached, do not drive too fast, never drink before the trip, do not drive on the wrong side of the road and park your car only where allowed. When hearing the ambulance or the fire department slow down, move your car to the side and let them pass.

 

Parking

It is not easy to find a parking place in Bratislava. It is advised to avoid crossed parking spaces, since those are reserved for residents.

Parking in the center is paid from 8 a.m. till 4 p.m. You can pay the minimum 30 min/ 0,60 € at the parking meter or use the SMS Parking. The rate is 1,80€/90 min or 8€/day (8h). Send a free-of-charge message to 2200 with the text:

Driving license

You can use the driving license issued in your country. After 185 days of your stay it is recommended to get a national driving license. More questions related to driving documents can be requested here.

 

Car registration

Generally, it is possible to register imported cars from EU and some other countries. It is not possible to register right hand-driven cars. Request more information at the Ministry of Interior: infoppz@minv.sk. Don't forget to givr your name, address and clearly specify your request.
